Dodge the Daily Drudgery: 10 TIPS TO ENJOY WORK

12/3/2019

,Ask the average worker spends more time at work than anywhere else and depending on the situation, that can be either a hopeful or a depressing statistic. If the time you spend at work is less than pleasurable, the daily grind can really wear you down, but it does not have to be that way.

If you are ready to ditch the drudgery and get more out of life and work, here are 10 ways to enjoy your workplace more.

1. Personalize your workspace. It may seem cliche, but a little goes a long way when it comes to feeling good in your workspace. Personalizing your space with family photographs, gifts from friends, and funny knick-knacks can help you breath easier and feel at home while you get things done.

2. Make some friends. Chances are you spend more time with your work colleagues than your family, and forging relationships can make that time more fun. Make a point to say "Hello" to the people you work with when you arrive and get to know them. You are all in this together after all!

3. Keep growing your skills. The better you are at your job, the more enjoyable your work will become. Try to take some classes, read up on your industry and work to improve your skills and keep moving forward with your career.

4. Find the right corporate fit. If you don't click with your employer, no amount of effort will make your job more enjoyable. A happy career starts with finding the right fit. If you are not happy where you are, you might need to look for a business with a different work culture that suites your morals and personality.

5. Do something nice for a coworker. One act of kindness always sparks another. Even something as small as offering to get someone a coffee when you get up to get one can make an impact. You could ask if they would like help with anything they are working on. Everyone needs help sometimes, and reaching out to a coworker in need will make you, and them, feel better and closer as a team.

6. Work on your work/life balance. It can be easier said then done. Your job is important, but so is the rest of your life. Finding the right work/life balance will make every aspect of your day, including the hours you spend at work, more enjoyable. Make goals each day at work

7. Bring passion to your work. No matter what you do for a living, being passionate about your career will make your work more enjoyable. Maybe this is your career or maybe it is a stepping stone to better things. Either way, do it to the best of your ability and only good will come from it.

8. Stop trying to do it all. Taking on too much in your work and personal life could backfire badly, so stop trying to do everything yourself. Focus on the task at hand, take each project a step at a time and revel in a job well done. You should also never forget to reward yourself with some needed relaxation time.

9. Enjoy the ride. A bad commute can set the tone for a bad day to come, so look for ways to make the ride more enjoyable. Try to listen to a book on your ride to work. It will give you something to look forward to each morning. Not a reader? Download some stand-up comedy to listen to, or a playlist of your favorite songs.

10. Take time to decompress. If you have had a busy and less than enjoyable day, take time to relax and decompress. Something as simple as taking a walk or enjoying a healthy (or not so healthy) snack can make you feel better.

You spend a third or more of your waking hours at work, so you might as well enjoy it. If enjoyment is not the first word that comes to mind when you think about your job, it is time to turn things around. Hopefully these tips have inspired you to make your workdays better.

HR Houston is a vibrant organization with HR professionals from every industry. We enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing their experiences. Dr. Frankeny is an energetic and engaging speaker and this presentation was no exception. Even the MPS consultants where taking notes as she spoke about leaders and how to use self reflection as a coaching tool to help them succeed. We here at MPS are very excited to be more involved with HR Houston moving forward. Make sure and visit their website for membership information.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time working in the "Glass City". Why is it called that? They made glass there. Still do! We spent our free time exploring the beautiful waterways and restaurants. We learned a lot about the history of this unique city and had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of people. We cannot wait till next time!

A look to the future

MPS took many major steps to better ourselves in the past 12 months. One of the more noticeable steps was the one we took away from paper and pencil tests for our assessment centers.
We are living in a time where we rely on technologies to give us better results faster. Do you need to test 700 people this week with a fast turn around for the results? No problem! To keep up with this high demand, we have moved a great deal of our tests online. Instead of bringing hundreds of scantron sheets we will bring enough tablets for every testing session. That way all the scores are received instantly, no scanning required.

Maybe this video is a little over the top. But it is true that just reading a resume is never enough when it comes to recognizing a candidate's value or personality. The right combination of interview and assessments tailored to the desired position will yield the best results. What is the right combination? That's where we come in!

The view was beautiful as we landed. The weather may not be as warm as Houston, but we love working in New Jersey. Here is to a great week!
